Moral emotions in early childhood: Validation of the Moral Emotions Questionnaire (MEQ)

Moral emotions are experienced in daily life and crucial for mediating appropriate social behaviors, as they prevent individuals from committing transgressions. In this study, caregivers of 377 children aged between 2.5 6.5 years old completed the Emotions Questionnaire (MEQ), a parent report aimed to separately identify presence shame, guilt, pride behaviors early childhood. To validate newly developed questionnaire, confirmatory factor analysis measurement invariance were conducted, internal consistency, concurrent validity tested. Outcomes confirmed that three moral can be individually identified through MEQ, even at such an age. The MEQ scales showed acceptable consistencies associations externalizing internalizing competence accordance with previous research, therefore confirming validity.
